Broom Factory

Hello everyone.  Praise the Lord!

I had walked into a room of an elderly gentleman, his name was Gino but went by the nickname Jerry.  He was lying in bed and had just finished up his lunch.  His lunch was a awesome smelling plate of baked fish with rice and vegetables.  He said that it was delicious and he enjoyed it very much.

After he was done and leaning back, we started talking.  He shared with me that he was born and raised on a farm in Mattoon, Illinois.  He said that when the farm work was done, they would work at the local broom factory.

He shared with me that his job would be to wrap the chords around the broom just after the wooden stalk to keep the straw tight.  He smiled and laughed when he told me about.  Clearly it was a good and happy memory for him.

Using child labor back in those days was common, and sometimes necessary when you are a farmer.  But It has always have been good memories to all of the people that I have spoken with about it.  Today it is talked down upon, but maybe it wasn't so bad.

Did you have a job as a youngster?  Can you tell me about in the comments section?
