Ice Fishing

Hello everyone.  Praise the Lord!

I was with a patient named John.  He had been a cocaine user and a prison inmate for most of his life.  After taking him on a smoke break, so he could smoke a cigar, we sat in his room telling stories. One of these stories was a time when John was a young man.

John was originally from, and grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana.  He was raised there, and married and had a great life with lots of family and friends.  One day John and some of his friends decided to go fishing.

They all decided to go fishing in Lake Michigan.  This was in the wintertime, but all of the lakes and ponds are frozen over.  In the north they just call that ice fishing!  Here in the south we all tend to hide when it gets a little cold.  Up north they are very active and enjoy cold weather activities.

They drive up to Lake Michigan, around the southern end of the lake.  Even though all of the lakes and ponds are frozen over by now, Lake Michigan is a very large lake, more like a sea.  It was frozen solid around the shore, but not miles out over the open water.

But it is still safe along the shore.  They drive out onto the lake to go fishing.  Its in a safe area, and they cut holes into the ice and drop their fishing lines.  They catch several fish and are drinking and have a great time.

Then one of Johns friends gets a little cold and decided to get in his car, start it up and warm up.  The problem was that the cars exhaust pipe was pointed down towards the ice!  At first it didn't seem like a problem, but as time went on, the ice started to melt!

John and his other friends warned the guy that the ice was melting under his car exhaust.  But the guy refused to believe that it was a problem.  He didn't want to move his car either.  In the meantime, the hole kept getting bigger!

Sure enough, the ice weakened around the hole and the weight of the car was pushing down on the weakened ice!  That is when disaster happened!  The car started to crash through the ice!  The hard-headed friend just managed to get out of the car as it went down through the ice!

The car went all the way to the bottom of the lake!  Because they were so far away from the shore, they had to get a helicopter out there.  Divers swam down and hooked up the car with thick cables, and the helicopter lifted it out of the lake.  By law, the owner of the car is required to pay for all of that work, which cost a small fortune!

After he told me this story, he died four days later!

Have you ever gone ice fishing?  Can you tell us about it in the comments section?
