Rape!
Hello everyone. Praise the Lord!
I was in the smoking gazebo with a patient named John. I walked him out there so he could smoke a cigar. While sitting there together in the quiet warm morning, he shared with me a lot of stories about his life. This is one of those stories.
John, as a young man, as many young men did, joined the United States Army. He enlisted in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was born and raised. There he was married and his wife remained while he was a Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for his basic training.
After a few weeks of basic training, John received a letter from his wife back home. She had told him that she had been raped by another local man! This was devastating news!
John immediately showed the letter to his commanding officer. The commanding officer asked John what he wanted to do, finish up his training and take a leave, or have a discharge. John said that he wanted to return home and see about the situation.
The officer approved it since John was not in a good frame of mind for continuing training. The officer told John this, he would give John a "General Discharge under Honorable Conditions,"from the Army, that would guarantee that if John wanted to return to the Army at a later date, it wouldn't be a problem.
So John took the General Discharge and returned to his wife in Indianapolis, Indiana. There he found his wife okay and he stayed with her. A few days later, the local man that his wife said raped her knocked on the door!
John went outside and confronted him! He told him, "You got some kind of nerve coming back here!" John again said to him, "Do you know who I am?" John was very angry and he had a pistol on him!
He almost shot that man! But he told him never to return instead! He told me that he now is happy that he didn't shoot him!
John decided not to rejoin the Army. Instead he stayed home and eventually started to snort cocaine. He soon became addicted, which lasted a lifetime and eventually destroyed his heart! Four days after telling me this story at our hospice, John died!
Do you know of someone getting out of the military under bad circumstances? Can you tell us about it in the comments section?
