Just End It For Me!

Hello everyone.  Praise the Lord!

I was in a patient's room talking to the wife of the patient.  She was an elderly Jewish lady no taller than five feet.  Both her and her husband were in their seventies.  At first it seemed that she didn't want to talk, but as I started the conversation going, she seemed more comfortable with me.

She soon opened her heart about all of the trouble she had been having with his dementia or Alzheimer disease.  All of the times that she had to call the fire department to have her husband picked up off of the ground.  All  of the times that the police had to bring him home, because he wandered off.

In between our visit, one of our volunteers that brings in her dog for the patients to pet came in for about thirty minutes.  She is a beautiful lady with a Yorkie dog in a pouch.  A very cute petting dog.

Then she revealed that when his disease was confirmed and he was getting worse, they had a difficult discussion.  He said to his wife to "just end it for me!  Please, just end it for me!"   Meaning, that, he wanted his wife to kill him so that he didn't have to go through the Alzheimer disease process.

His wife was startled!  She told him that she couldn't do that because they would, "follow the money." Which meant that the police would know that she did it and would be arrested for it.  Assisted suicide is illegal in the State of Texas!  Her husband knew that he was dying and just wanted a quicker ending to his life.

I sensed that she may have felt a bit guilty about not carrying out his wishes. But she knew that she would go to jail for it.  Perhaps she was angry he even would ask her to do something like that. Ether way, she had been saddened by the entirety of the situation. Sometimes dying can be difficult, for both the patient and the family.
