He Made It Count!
Hello everyone. Praise the Lord!
John L. McCann graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1941. Decades later he was to be inducted into the schools Hall of Honor! St. Thomas is a very prestigious, and expensive Catholic school.
He was a young man of eighteen years old when he joined the Army for military service. He was sent over to Europe to fight the enemy in Italy. He turned out to be a great hero in battle. He was awarded the silver star and a purple heart when he was wounded in combat. The Silver Star metal is the third highest decoration the Army can award. The highest is the Medal of Honor, then the Purple Heart. The Silver Star is not awarded to just anyone. He was wounded and shed his blood in a foreign land.
According to one of his granddaughters, he was in combat in northern Italy, and the man next to him caught a forty millimeter shell in his chest, it exploded on impact, and the young soldier just disappeared! Later he had to catch one of his men who was shot and falling off a roof!
John's unit would later capture Adolf Hitler's headquarters in Hamburg Germany. I asked her if he had sat in Hitler's chair. She said that he sure did! I told her that I would have done the same thing. I didn't get around to ask how he had gotten wounded and how he was awarded to silver star. I'm sure it is a great story!
After the war John attended the University of Texas and was admitted to the Legal Bar of Texas in 1949. He was President of the Houston Bar Association from 1976 to 1977. He returned from the war and made a great success of himself and his community. He made it count!
