A Doctor Ahead Of His Time
Hello everyone. Praise the Lord!
I was talking to a nice lady, in a room directly across from the nurses station, on the third floor. She was a middle-aged lady named Donna. She is from East Texas, but has been everywhere! Her mother was the patient, and her father had already passed away.
Donna was telling me about her parents. She said that her mother had always been very controlling all of her life. Jokingly, I said that she sounded like my ex-wife! She smiled and laughed! She never talked about her again.
She said that her father was a Jewish man. Her mother was a Baptist. The children were all raised as Baptist. Her father had become a doctor and then joined the U.S. Army. I asked Donna why he would do that, instead of going into private practice. She said that he wanted to help people.
He was then shipped out to Japan to do his army service. He had served for four years in service to his country as a military doctor. He then was discharged and returned home to the Heights, that is a neighborhood in Houston, Texas.
The Heights was a white neighborhood. This was in the 1950's. Even though he lived and worked in a white neighborhood, he saw everyone. Orientals, Blacks, and Hispanics! Minorities were not coming in the back door either.
If you wanted to see her father as a doctor, you had to sit with all people who were there to see him. Today, that is not a big deal, it's normal. But, in the 1950's, that was a big deal! Donna's father was certainly a doctor ahead of his time!
Do you know someone who was ahead of his time? Can you tell us about it in the comments section?
