The Overcoming Volunteer

Hello everyone.  Praise the Lord!

I got to the hospice on a warm but cloudy morning, the dew point through the roof after all of the rain we have gotten this week.  I went to the break room for a few duties and found a new volunteer  in training.  He was an older white man, retired and a little chubbier than most, and wanting to make a difference.

He was all by himself watching TV and having trouble with the volume.  He was all by himself because everyone else in the training class was at the funeral home doing the tour.  He told me that he had to bury two of his three children and didn't want to take that tour.  He said that he had seen enough of that stuff.

We sat down and he told me about his surviving daughter and his four grand kids.  The deaths of his son and daughter.  The son to a car accident, and the daughter to disease, which she was at our hospice and received care there.  That's why he wanted to volunteer here.

We talked about my job and his desire to do something part-time.  He said he was interested in volunteering for home care.  I told him that since he was retired and had a clear schedule, that he was ideal for home care volunteering.

I was truly amassed on how strong this man was and the way that he was using his grief to motivate him to do good thing instead of bring him down.  He was a true over comer!

Has anyone else had a difficult family circumstances?  Can you tell us about it in the comments section?
