The Escape

Hello everyone.  Praise the Lord!

I had a nice morning volunteering last Thursday. I visited with with a ninety-eight year old gentleman. He is a Jewish-German man who immigrated to this country in 1937. He and his family was under intense persecution in Nazi Germany. They decided to escape to America.

This gentleman and his brother immigrated to New York City, to secure gainful employment and find a place to live. They then sent for the entire family to leave their homeland in Germany for the United States. He said that they were very lucky to get out of Nazi Germany just in time! After the family was all settled in, this gentleman joined the U.S. Army just before Pearl Harbor. He served as an interpreter in the Army for the duration of the war in Europe

. Just before the end of the conflict he was wounded by shrapnel in Belgium.   He was sent to a hospital in occupied Germany then England then back the America. While in Germany he had the opportunity to visit his old home village and to visit with the people. He went back to New York City then later to Laredo, Texas and then to Houston, Texas. He had a story that movies are made of!

Do you know an immigrant that went to war?  Can you tell me about it in the comments section?
