Back As A Hospice Volunteer

 Hello everyone.  Praise the Lord!

After a few years off to get married and travel the country, I decided to return to be a hospice volunteer! And better yet, I will be joined by my beautiful wife, Gretchen.  We will be volunteering together! It all started about three weeks ago when I was voted in as the chaplain of the local American Legion in Wild Rose, Wisconsin. Gretchen and I are both Air Force military veterans, and we will try to visit a lot of veterans on hospice care.

Again, as the last hospice that I volunteered for twelve years, I will not reveal the name of it, or of the patients. This is for the privacy protection of everyone involved. Including myself.  We had to apply, then take a TB test, background check, and interviews.  Yes, it was a process!

Our volunteer coordinator, we will call her Mary, meet us a a nursing home to visit a patient under supervision. We went together to the room, entered in to find two friends of her already there. She was very restless, as she had a very bad night. She had a medical emergency and was anxious today.

So we excuse ourselves to give her more space. The three of us then walked to the break room and discussed the situation with the patient. While we were talking, the nurse walked up to us and explained the situation to us. She also said that the patient thought that I looked like her deceased husband!

We decided that next week we can all try again, maybe with another patient, or maybe back with this one, depending on patient availability. But even though it didn't go well with this patient, it felt good to be back in the patient care mix.
